Review

Dear readers, I must confess that the recent film “LOL” has caught my attention. With its contemporary storyline and themes, it may seem a far cry from the usual period dramas and romances that I am accustomed to writing about. But as Jane Austen once famously said, “The more I know of the world, the more am I convinced that I shall never see a man whom I can really love.”

In this modern retelling of love in the digital age, “LOL” follows the life of Lola (Miley Cyrus), a high school student navigating through teenage angst and romance. She lives with her mother Anne (Demi Moore), a divorcee who is trying to find love again while juggling her responsibilities as a parent.

The plot revolves around two main themes: first love and social media. Lola falls for Kyle (Douglas Booth), a British exchange student who gives her butterflies in her stomach. On the other hand, her best friend Emily (Ashley Hinshaw) is dealing with betrayal from her boyfriend who has shared private photos of them on social media.

As we watch these characters struggle with their relationships, we see how technology has changed the way we interact with each other. It’s no longer just about face-to-face conversations or writing letters; now people communicate through texts and social media apps like Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat.

But amidst all this modernity, there are some universal truths that still hold true. As Lola says in one of my favourite quotes from the film: “I was laughing out loud but no one was listening.” This speaks to how we all crave human connection and want to be heard.

Speaking of Lola’s character, Miley Cyrus gave an impressive performance in “LOL”. It was refreshing to see her take on a role outside of her comfort zone and show off her acting chops. Meanwhile, Demi Moore brought depth to Anne’s character as she navigated through her own personal struggles.

The film was directed by Lisa Azuelos, who also directed the original French version back in 2008. She was able to capture the essence of teenage life and the complexities of relationships in a relatable and authentic way.

The score and soundtrack also added to the film’s appeal. With songs from M83, The Civil Wars, and Foster the People, it was a perfect mix of indie and pop music.

Despite its strong cast and music selection, “LOL” didn’t receive much love from critics or audiences alike. It received mixed reviews upon its release in 2012 and struggled at the box office.

However, I believe that “LOL” is an important film for our time. It tackles themes that are relevant to young people today while still managing to convey timeless values about love and relationships. Even if some may not appreciate its modern trappings or teenage drama, it’s worth watching for Miley Cyrus’ performance alone.

In terms of filming and cinematography, “LOL” had some impressive scenes that captured the vibrancy of Paris. The Eiffel Tower served as a stunning backdrop for Kyle and Lola’s romantic moments, while the city’s bustling streets added to the energy of the film.

If I had one criticism though, it would be that “LOL” tried to pack in too many subplots into its narrative. The focus on social media could have been explored more fully instead of being relegated to a subplot alongside Anne’s midlife crisis and Lola’s relationship with her dad.

Overall, “LOL” may not be everyone’s cup of tea but it’s definitely worth giving a chance. It explores universal themes about love and human connection that transcend time periods or cultural differences. As Jane Austen once said, “A lady’s imagination is very rapid; it jumps from admiration to love, from love to matrimony in a moment.”

In the end, “LOL” is a film that captures those rapid jumps of imagination and takes us on a journey of teenage romance and self-discovery.
