Review

It was a warm summer day, the kind of day that made it impossible to think about anything other than lounging by the pool with a cold drink in hand. But despite the heat, I found myself drawn to the chilly darkness of the movie theater. There was a new film out, one that promised to be a haunting thriller that would keep me on the edge of my seat until the very end.

The Night House. Such a simple title for a movie that promised such complexity. I settled into my seat, anticipation building as the lights dimmed and the trailers began to roll.

The story begins with Beth (played by Rebecca Hall), a high school teacher who has just lost her husband Owen (Evan Jonigkeit) to suicide. As she struggles to come to terms with his death, strange things start happening in their lakeside home. Doors open and close on their own, objects move without explanation, and Beth begins to hear whispers in the night.

As she starts investigating her husband’s past, Beth discovers that he had been building another house on their property using plans he had created himself. The more she uncovers about this mysterious structure, however, the more she realizes that it holds dark secrets that threaten not only her sanity but also her very existence.

The Night House is not your typical horror movie. Yes, it has its share of jump scares and creepy moments, but what really sets it apart is its focus on character development and psychological depth. Rebecca Hall gives a powerful performance as Beth, holding us captive as we watch her unravel under the weight of grief and fear.

But it’s not just Hall’s acting that makes The Night House so compelling. David Bruckner’s direction is masterful, creating an atmosphere of unease and tension from start to finish. And thanks to Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski’s sharp script, every twist and turn feels earned rather than forced.

Of course, no movie is perfect, and The Night House is not without its flaws. Some of the supporting characters feel underdeveloped, and there are a few scenes that drag on longer than necessary. But these minor quibbles are easily overshadowed by the film’s strengths.

One thing that stood out to me in particular was the score by Ben Lovett. It’s haunting and atmospheric, perfectly complementing the film’s visuals and adding another layer of dread to an already intense experience.

As I left the theater, my mind was still reeling from what I had just seen. The Night House is not a movie for everyone – it’s dark, unsettling, and requires your full attention – but for those willing to take the plunge, it delivers in spades. If you’re a fan of horror that leaves you thinking long after the credits roll, then this is one movie you won’t want to miss.

In terms of its popularity and critical reception, The Night House has been well-received by both audiences and critics alike. It currently holds an 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with many praising its originality and performances.

It’s worth noting that the filming of The Night House was not without its challenges. Despite being set in upstate New York, much of the movie was actually filmed in Utah due to logistical issues. However, this turned out to be a blessing in disguise as it gave the filmmakers more control over their environment and allowed them to create a more immersive experience for viewers.

While The Night House may not have taken home any major awards yet (it premiered at Sundance earlier this year), it’s certainly generated plenty of buzz within the horror community. Many have hailed it as one of the best genre films of 2021 so far, with some even calling it a potential classic in years to come.

But don’t just take my word for it – go see The Night House for yourself. Whether you’re a diehard horror fan or just someone in the mood for a good scare, it’s sure to leave an impression. And who knows – you might even find yourself watching it again and again, each time uncovering new layers of meaning and terror that you never noticed before.
