In the year 2020, with its twisted pandemic and bewildering politics, the world needs a movie that is both inspiring and reflective. The film of which I speak is 20th Century Girl, directed by Greta Gerwig. In this tale of coming-of-age and self-discovery, Gerwig interweaves the stories of three women: Julie (Elle Fanning), Abbie (Greta Gerwig), and Lady Bird (Saoirse Ronan).
Set in Sacramento, California, in 2003, 20th Century Girl begins with Lady Bird’s quest for identity. She feels trapped in her Catholic high school and wants nothing more than to leave her hometown for college on the East Coast. Her mother, Marion (Laurie Metcalf), disapproves of everything Lady Bird does, from her punk rock style to her desire to attend a liberal arts college.
Meanwhile, Abbie is a feminist artist who encourages Julie to explore her sexuality and creativity. These three women bond over their mutual desire for independence and agency.
