Review
In a world full of troubles and worries, Roald Dahl offered us kids the chance to get lost in his magical worlds. His books have gained worldwide recognition not only among children, but also adults. Luckily for us, Dahl’s stories keep getting made into movies. The latest one is “The BFG,” a story about the friendship between a young orphan girl and a Big Friendly Giant.
The movie was directed by Steven Spielberg and adapted by screenwriter Melissa Mathison, who also collaborated with Spielberg on “E.T.” The movie features talented actors like Mark Rylance, Rebecca Hall, and Bill Hader.
The story follows Sophie (played by newcomer Ruby Barnhill), a lonely orphan who is snatched from her bed by a giant at the witching hour. She discovers that this giant is kind-hearted and gentle. He tells her that he’s known as the BFG (Big Friendly Giant), who unlike his fellow giants, doesn’t eat humans but instead has dream-catching business.
The two embark on an adventure to stop the other giants from eating humans once again. This leads them to meeting the queen of England (Oscar-winning actress Penelope Wilton) who becomes their unlikely ally.
The plot is captivating and heartfelt with amazing visuals that will leave you in awe. The special effects of “The BFG” are truly remarkable; it makes it seem like giants are actually roaming around our world. It’s no surprise that it was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
The score composed by John Williams adds more beauty to this already enchanting film. Williams’ signature style complements Spielberg’s direction perfectly in this whimsical tale.
Steven Spielberg managed to capture Roald Dahl’s essence perfectly with his storytelling and imaginative vision. The film’s innocence and wonder remind us that there are still magical moments waiting for us in life – all we need to do is open our hearts to them.
One of my favorite lines in the movie is when Sophie asks BFG, “Why did you take me?” And he responds, “Because I hears your lonely heart begging to be found.”
Mark Rylance delivers an exceptional performance as BFG. His portrayal gives us a gentle giant who is shy and compassionate. Ruby Barnhill also shines in her debut role as Sophie. She creates a character that is curious, brave, and caring.
“The BFG” was also special for Spielberg because it marked his second collaboration with Melissa Mathison (the first being “E.T.”). It turned out to be her last screenplay before she died of cancer in 2015. Spielberg dedicated this movie to her memory.
The movie did not perform as well as expected at the box office, but it still won audiences over with its beautiful storytelling and stunning visuals. Even though it didn’t gain much critical acclaim or awards, “The BFG” will always remain a beloved film among family audiences.
In conclusion, “The BFG” is a testament to Roald Dahl’s legacy of inspiring children’s imaginations while teaching valuable life lessons. With its heartwarming story, brilliant performances, and breathtaking visuals – this film is one that both children and adults can enjoy.
As Dahl once said, “Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.” So let us embrace the magic that Dahl brought to our lives through his stories and now through movies like “The BFG”.
