Review
Once upon a time, there was a man named Christian Wolff. He was not your average accountant, for he had an extraordinary gift of mathematics. The numbers spoke to him in ways that others couldn’t comprehend, and he utilized this talent in ways that were both good and bad.
The movie “The Accountant,” directed by Gavin O’Connor, tells the intriguing story of Christian Wolff. As a child diagnosed with Autism, Christian’s father subjected him to brutal training as a method to prepare him for the harsh realities of the world. This upbringing transferred into adulthood where we witness Christian utilizing his unique skillset in accounting to work as a forensic accountant for some of the world’s most dangerous criminal organizations.
As the plot unfolds, we realize that the path Christian has undertaken is not without consequences or risks. He finds himself in hot water with both the law enforcement agencies and his clients as he struggles with personal obligations while also trying to help those who need it most.
Affleck’s portrayal of Wolff is reminiscent of his Oscar-winning performance as an unconventional hero in “Good Will Hunting.” He plays the role with such conviction that one can’t help but emphasize with this flawed protagonist.
In addition to Affleck’s tremendous acting skills, “The Accountant” boasts an all-star cast including Anna Kendrick, J.K. Simmons, Jeffrey Tambor and Jon Bernthal.
One scene that particularly stands out is when Kendrick’s character Dana Cummings confronts Christian about her embezzlement suspicions:
Dana: “You’re different from other accountants.”
Christian: “I’m not sure if that’s a compliment or not.”
This dialogue serves as an excellent representation of how calculated yet quirky Wolff can be throughout the movie.
One fascinating aspect of this film is how it transforms from being a psychological thriller with sinister overtones into an action-packed adventure with high-speed chases and intense fights scenes. Nevertheless, this well-executed transition did not come without criticism from some for being too outlandish.
While the movie may have had its fair share of flaws, it was still a box-office success and received mixed reviews from the critics. The film’s popularity inspired rumors of a possible sequel, but the director dismissed them.
Filming “The Accountant” took place in various locations in Georgia and Illinois, besides Atlanta. While not entirely notable for its cinematography or special effects, the movie’s score by composer Mark Isham deserves recognition for its emotional depth and thrilling quality.
In conclusion, “The Accountant” is an engaging story that narrates how even the most unlikely hero can make a difference. As I watched this movie unfold, I realized that sometimes we need to look beyond our perceived flaws or limitations to find what makes us unique. Whether you are a fan of dramas or action-thrillers, “The Accountant” will undoubtedly keep you entertained from start to finish.
