It was a sultry evening in Kerala, India when I stumbled across the movie “Pranaya Vilasam” – a film that left me lost for words. This Malayalam language flick was a 2003 release, directed by Azad Alavil. The cinematography by Vipin Mohan captured the rustic beauty of Kerala with finesse.
As I sat down to watch the film, I was immediately drawn into the plot. The storyline revolved around two close friends, Shivan and Vineeth. Shivan (played by Vijayaraghavan) is a wealthy businessman and Vineeth (played by Suresh Gopi) is a struggling writer who is deeply in love with Shivan’s sister Kalyani (played by Samyuktha Varma).
The movie opens with Vineeth visiting Kalyani at her home, expressing his love and desire to marry her. In response, Kalyani admits that her feelings are mutual but asks Vineeth to wait until she has finished her studies. However, their love story takes an unexpected turn when Kalyani gets married off to a wealthy businessman instead.
The plot thickens as Shivan discovers that his sister has fallen in love with someone else and sets out on a mission to separate them. He even goes as far as hiring goons to beat up Vineeth, almost killing him in the process.
The film’s dialogue speaks volumes about society’s views on marriage and class distinctions: “Our society only accepts marriages between people of similar social status,” says Shivan’s wife, played by Reshmi Boban.
